Dear Bay Shore-Brightwaters Community,
The Bay Shore School District has been made aware of three (3) proposed charter schools in our area. The Academy Charter School Brentwood Elementary School (K-5) and the Academy Charter School Brentwood Middle School would be located within the Brentwood Union Free School District. The Academy Charter School Central Islip High School would be located within the Central Islip Union Free School District. The proposals for all three schools are currently under review by the SUNY Charter Schools Institute.
Each time a charter school has been proposed, whether in Bay Shore or in surrounding districts, parents and community members have made it clear that there is neither a need nor a demand for an alternative to Long Island’s strong public schools. A charter school would not help our students, but rather it would potentially divert resources away from the programs that make Bay Shore an exceptional place for students to learn and grow.
If you would like to share your opinion, written comments may be submitted to the SUNY Charter Schools Institute via email at charter.legal@suny.edu. A sample letter of opposition can be found on our website. The timeline for a decision on these charter school applications has not yet been announced.
As always, thank you for your continued support of our students and the Bay Shore Schools.
Sincerely,
Steven J. Maloney, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
